Education about Indigenous ways of knowing, cultural sensitivity training and how to work with Indigenous and other racialized communities

CKD is more prevalent and progresses faster in people from racialized communities, yet racialized people experiencing Late Stage Kidney Disease are less likely to receive the optimal therapy—kidney transplant. Our unique Canadian history, including the relationships between our government and Indigenous and other racialized communities, has contributed directly to these inequities and must be faced directly. The calls to action by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission give a blueprint for how these inequities can begin to be addressed. Relevant to the KRESCENT training platform are calls to action 22–24.

As part of the KRESCENT curriculum, we aim to increase awareness and address biases in trainees and mentors.

We have commissioned virtual training modules on this topic to expand trainee knowledge.

To address calls to action 23ii and 24, all KRESCENT trainees are will be required to take Indigenous cultural sensitivity training (SAN’YAS).

Specific OCAP training (ownership, control, access and possession) is also available for trainees interested in research in Indigenous communities.

Please note that these training modules are a significant time investment, and you should start as soon as you can.
